New Homeowners Maintenance Tips

Congratulations on becoming a new homeowner! Owning a house can be a thrilling experience, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. As a homeowner, it is essential to keep your property in good condition, which requires regular maintenance. Here are some home maintenance tips to help you keep your home in tip-top shape.

First, change the locks. You never know how many people have a key to your new house, and replacing or rekeying the locks can ensure your safety. Also, check the code on your garage door opener, and make sure you locate all the remotes for the garage.

Second, check and replace HVAC filters if necessary. You should change the filters every 90 days as it saves energy costs, improves air quality, and reduces wear and tear on the furnace. Remember to check the dryer's lint trap often as it poses a fire hazard.

Third, clean the refrigerator coils regularly. The coils at the back of the refrigerator are typically dirty and cleaning them with a brush will help your fridge run better, last longer and be more energy efficient.

Fourth, test and replace smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries in all of the detectors and check them regularly to ensure they are in good working condition.

Fifth, locate the main water shut-off valve and circuit breaker box. Familiarizing yourself with the exact location will minimize the disruption and destruction in case of an emergency.

Finally, drain the hot water heater once a year to remove any sediment that can reduce the efficiency of your heater and affect the taste of the water.

By following these home maintenance tips, you can ensure your home remains safe, comfortable and in good condition. Remember, a little maintenance can go a long way in keeping your property in top shape.
